Having a sound defense is key for longevity in boxing or any combat sport for that matter. Defense can be a broad umbrella encompassing many different movements. Today we’re talking about slipping; or moving your head from side to side to avoid straight punches.

One of the most common mistakes that people make when slipping is just moving their upper body; keeping their knees stiff as they awkwardly hinge their hips. If this describes you, don’t worry; we can fix this! Yes, there is hope for you yet. Instead of hinging at your hips, try to keep your knees loose and bent. When you slip to your rear side, turn your lead shoulder in. When you slip to your lead side, turn your rear shoulder in. Having your knees, hips and shoulders working in conjunction is the key to having smooth and balanced head movement.
