The term “reach advantage” is thrown around a lot in combat sports. Being longer isn’t necessarily an advantage; it all comes down to who can control the distance that each exchange takes place. Although it may seem impossible to get close to a taller fighter, the video below details some key strategies to close the distance and keep the fight at your range.

Forward pressure is key to getting past the longer fighters range. However, just moving straight forward will result in running into a lot of punches! Slipping, or bringing your head off-line as you step forward is helpful to avoid straight punches coming at you. Rolling underneath hooks can also be a great opportunity to quickly close distance.

Once you’re able to keep your opponent on their heels moving backwards, they’ll eventually run into a barricade. Whether it be ropes in a ring, cage wall, or some other form of wall, this will prevent them from moving backwards and continuing to keep you at their range. From here, keeping them on the ropes will make it easier to keep the fight at your range. As they move side to side looking to escape the ropes, use hooks to the body to keep them where you want them. Head shots are great, but are too easy to roll underneath; providing an opportunity for them to circle away from the ropes. Cutting them off with body shots is usually a better option for keeping them in place.
