This week we wanted a combo that incorporates head off-line punches with the check hook. This is a fluid combination that places an emphasis on head movement and footwork with punches. Before we get into the details, what does all of that mean?

In our Hudson Valley boxing classes, we take defense seriously. Our fundamental classes always include footwork, teaching our students to stay balanced as they move with their strikes. This combo starts off with Steve stepping in with the jab. In the video at the top of the page, you can see Steve stepping his lead foot and landing his jab simultaneously. From here, he double jabs again, moving towards his left side. This step to his left lines up his right hand with his target, however it also puts him in line for his opponents right hand. Understanding this concept, Steve moves his head to the left, successfully slipping the right hand of his opponent. At the same time, he fires his rear uppercut, landing at the same time that his opponent intended to land. From here he quarter turns with his feet, while throwing a left hook to finish his combo. This hook combined with a quarter turn is known as a check hook. The check hook can be a great way to get out of the way of an aggressive opponent, or can be used to create new angles to follow up an attack. Watch the video at the top of the screen to learn how to execute the check hook!
