Developing boxing skill requires one to train multiple facets of offense and defense. You have to spend time working on footwork, head movement, moving while punching, cutting angles, amongst many other skills. Boxers not only spend time on skill work, but also make a dedicated effort towards building their bodies for their sport. However, one of the most important but often neglected parts of the body to train are the eyes.

Training your eyes could have a variety of meaning. In the video shown above, Poughkeepsie boxing coaches Marcus and Oliver show a drill meant to improve reaction time and shot selection. By using “silent pads” the boxer is forced to rely on visual cues instead of verbal commands, training their eyes to recognize the necessary shot. It also can be used a a reaction time drill. This translates to fighting and sparring by training the fighter to see where their opponent is creating openings and capitalizing on them quickly.
